PCSS Working To Implement Workforce Bus For Middle School CTE Learning

Putnam County Schools working to convert an old school bus that will serve as a traveling CTE hub for students.

Director of Schools Corby King said the project was made possible through the Innovative School Models grant. He said the goal of the grant is to provide career exploration opportunities to younger students in the system.

“Providing career clusters where middle school students specifically can go on to the bus and have different modules they can go through, we’ll have a career coach that’s assigned,” King said. “And they can be on the buses, go through, check out what’s available, and it aligns with their career path.”

King said this will service all middle schools. He said instead of having to house specific rooms at each school, they will have one bus that serves all middle schools to travel around the county.

King said they hope the school bus will be ready by next fall. He said they don’t have a specific timeline, but that is their target date.

“The teacher will book time with the bus that they can schedule the bus to come to be on site,” King said. “And they can do that at any time throughout the nine-week period they have a specific group of students.”

King said they are also doing career assessments through a new program called Naviance next year. He said every student will identify their areas of interest and be presented with different career possibilities and what can be offered at the high school whether a student is interested in the CTE path or the university path.
