Putnam Schools Celebrate Read Across America Day

Putnam County Schools celebrating Read Across America Day, a nationwide effort to instill a love of reading in students and emphasize its importance.

Dr. Diana Wood is the PreK through 4th-grade Instructional Supervisor. She said Putnam County Schools celebrated by inviting guest readers to read to classrooms at several schools and across many grade levels.

“It’s fun to have somebody different to come to read,” Wood said. “The students get a good example of a fluent reader, a different person spreading their joy of reading. And oftentimes that person will bring their favorite book so the kids will be introduced to some new literature.”

Wood said kids are typically very receptive to the guest readers and feel inspired to read more.

“A lot of times the person will introduce themselves and talk about what job they have and about how important reading is in their own job,” Wood said. “It’s just a great example for them to have that model for reading in different occupations.”

Wood said parents can help to carry the energy Read Across America Day brings year-round. She said reading to your child not only acts as a bonding experience but shows that reading is not just school-related. Wood said it can create the idea that reading is something that can be fun as much as it is important for work.
