A residential fire on Monterey’s West Hoyt Avenue early Tuesday morning has left a family of 10 without a home.
Chief Kevin Peters said when crews arrived on scene, it was determined the fire had begun in the basement and had moved up into the attic. He said the official cause of the fire is still under investigation.
“I think it’s electrical in nature, it’s an older house that still had the cloth-covered wiring and some remodeling had been done but not very recently,” Peters said. “But they had some issues with breakers going, so that’s where we’re going to focus our investigation at the moment.”
Peters said all members of the family and their four pets escaped without injury. He said the structure is a total loss, and the items inside the home were lost to smoke, fire, and water damage.
