Sherrell Files School Safety Bill To Possibly Allocate Money For Access Technology

State Representative Paul Sherrell has filed a house bill that could create a new funding pool for school safety technology.

Sherrell said the idea came after a school safety visit with the White County School System. The district implemented new access control that has keyless locks and allows a school resource officer to secure a door through a cell phone.

“We need to look at trying to put some money in some kind of a fund where schools can ask for help to get this implemented in their schools,” Sherrell said. “In this time of day, we want to try to get this money to help safety in our schools.”

Sherrell said he received a firsthand presentation on the technology while touring the system. Sherrell said school resource officers were able to lock all doors in a matter of minutes. Sherrell said he thinks the tool will benefit the safety of students and teachers statewide.

With the house bill just filed, it will have to go through committee before lawmakers will consider.
