Fuel And Feed Costs Driver Behind Rising Egg Prices

Terrapin Springs Farm in Hilham provides local eggs through roughly 50 hens. Owner Ryan Smith said fuel and feed costs are behind the price spikes.

“It definitely takes any profit out of the eggs, because you don’t really want to charge that much cause it doesn’t seem normal to have prices that high,” Smith said. “They have to come up because our bills are coming up, and I think it is a trickle-down effect.”

Smith said he started to notice costs increase around the summertime. Smith said their distributor indicated that making and transporting feed has grown more expensive than ever. Smith said he has not seen egg prices this high in six years of handling eggs.

Smith said at a local level, it has caused the farm to increase prices to $6.50 per dozen eggs.
