Poinsettias Not The Only Christmas Plant You Should Keep Away From Pets

Poinsettias are mildly toxic for your pets, but you should be more aware about two other decorative plants that present danger.

White County Ag Extension Office Director Scott Swoape said holly and mistletoe create worse symptoms for pets if ingested.

“The holly what’s toxic on those are the pretty, red berries,” Swoape said. “Definitely decorate with caution if you are using holly or any of the mistletoe. It’s a higher level of toxicity.”

Swoape said symptoms include severe vomiting, diarrhea and labored breathing. Swoape said poinsettias cause less severe symptoms, but you should still be thoughtful about where you place the plant.

“At the extension office, we field this question every winter, because everybody loves to decorate,” Swoap said. “Poinsettias top the list for holiday decorations. Should pet owners by concerned about that? It’s a myth. Everybody always thinks it is highly toxic, but the American Kennel Club actually identified it as mildly toxic.”

Swoape said he recommends keeping the plants above ground level.
