Defeated Creek Youth Deer Management Hunt returns for its 11th year this weekend.
Cordell Hull Park Ranger Spencer Taylor said young hunters between ages ten and 16 applied to participate. He said starting Saturday, eight hunters will take to eight, pre-set-up areas for hunting.
“And it provides the interpretive opportunity to be able to reach these children in a controlled environment and we can teach hunter ed,” Taylor said. “As well as maintain our deer herd in healthy numbers.”
Taylor said this year saw about 25 applications. He said those participating are required to have a mentor and take all required safety courses.
Taylor said hunters have seen much success in their harvest in years past. While it’s a great opportunity to learn and train their hunting skills, Taylor said previous participants have said their favorite part is the lunch break where everyone comes together.
“That’s sort of a camaraderie time,” Taylor said. “It’s a good time for hunters to come out and interact with one another, share hunting stories, and talk about their morning thus far.”
