Clay Co Receives State Grant To Continue Restoration Efforts On Courthouse

Clay County has received a $6,000 grant from the Tennessee Historical Commission to continue window restoration efforts at the county courthouse.

Courthouse Curator Thomas Watson said the county will match the funds with $4,000 making for a $10,000 project.

“Hopefully it will do six windows,” Watson said. “It will do the windows in the old offices in the bottom of the courthouse that over the years were really damaged, and we are in danger of losing the windows.”

Watson said the windows will be removed from the courthouse and taken to a restoration site. Watson said they will be completely dismantled, so any damaged pieces can be restored.

Watson said the historic courthouse has a total of 28 windows with all but two original. Watson said last year, the county was able to restore 10 thanks to local donations and an adopt a window program.
