Fall Creek Falls State Park will be hosting Christmas on the Mountain this year with slight changes from previous celebrations.
Assistant Park Manager Devin Simmons said while planning the festivities, they realized there would not be enough space to hold both the craft fair and the traditional Appalachian Christmas. He said they decided to cancel the craft fair portion.
“It’s an opportunity for us to connect with the local community and speak about Appacalchian traditions in regard to Christmas,” Simmons said. “So that’s the main primary focus of the event is to teach people what Christmas would have been like for folks.”
Simmons said Christmas on the Mountain originally began in the 1970s to try and increase visitors in the off-season. He said it has gone through several iterations since its inception.
Simmons said although there won’t be a craft fair portion this year, the park has a great relationship with craft vendors. He said visitors can expect to shop the craft fair during their Mountaineer Folk Festival.
“It’s kind of our key even throughout the calendar and we also want to provide a good opportunity for folks to have a successful event,” Simmons said. “And we know a lot of the public really look forward to seeing that. So what shape it takes in the future I can’t speak to that in the future, but I can say that for this year there will not be a craft fair portion.”
The event takes place on December 3rd at the Betty Dunn Nature Center from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
