Daylight Savings Time coming to an end serves as a good reminder to check the status of your smoke alarm.
Overton County Fire Chief’s Association Chair Scott Ray said it’s as easy as pressing a button.
“It’s good to do it at least twice a year,” Ray said. “And this time of year it’s when people will have space heaters and an increase in the chance of a house fire. So a smoke alarm is definitely going to protect them a lot more if it works.”
According to the National Fire Protection Association, some three out of five fire deaths happen in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.
Ray said if the smoke alarm beeps repeatedly or doesn’t beep at all, it means it’s not in working order. He said a simple fix will be to replace the battery or get a new smoke alarm.
