Cookeville Police Department applying for grant money through the new state Violent Crime Intervention Fund.
Chief Randy Evans said the fund has some $100 million set aside for local law enforcement agencies.
“They’re mainly for evidence-based programs, technology, and any strategies developed for violent crime reduction,” Evans said. “It’ll be a grant period from March of 2023 to June of 2025. The other good news is that there is no match.”
Evans said the department intends to apply in December of this year before the January deadline. He said there are two opportunities for the department to apply.
Evans said one is based on the law enforcement agency’s reported three-year average of violent crime. He said in that fund, there is $225,904 available to the Cookeville Police Department.
“There’s also a collaborative enhancement grant with this as well that’s up to $2 million,” Evans said. “That would involve us collaborating with other law enforcement agencies in the area.”
Cookeville City Council approved the authorization to apply unanimously at its Thursday night meeting.
