Chimneys Need To Be Inspected Once A Year Before Heating Up

A Crossville fireplace professional says your chimney needs to be inspected at least once this year before firing up your fireplace.

Fireplaces Direct Owner Terry Bowen said once accumulation reaches a quarter inch or greater, you run the risk of a fire in the passageway where smoke exits.

“In 43 years, I’ve seen a lot of flue fires,” Bowen said. “Flue fires can vary from intensity from a few hundred degrees to over 2,100 degrees. Now we have roofs covered with leaves. A small flue fire can catch those leaves on fire.”

Bowen said chimney fires are one of the most common reasons for a house fire this time of year. Bowen said home owners can visually check for the tar collection in your chimney. Bowen said the best way to clean it out is to find a professional.
