Monterey Aldermen Will Follow Charter To Fill Mayor Position

The loss of Mayor Nathan Walker leaves the Monterey Board of Aldermen with the job of filling his role.

MTAS Consultant Warren Nevad said the next steps will be based on the town’s charter.

“There’s a provision that says, ‘All vacancies in the Board of Mayor and Aldermen shall be filled for the unexpired term,” Nevad said. “By a majority vote, from the remaining Mayor and Aldermen.'”

Nevad said it will be up to the Board if they decided to have another election to fill the position, or simply appoint someone itself by vote. He said in the meantime, Vice Mayor Mark Farley will assume the duties of leading the Board.

Nevad said whoever is appointed will serve the unexpired term, which lasts until September 2024. He said until they appoint someone to fill the role, the Board can still conduct city business as usual.

“I believe the city is in capable hands with Mr. Farley he’s been vice mayor before,” Nevad said. “I think we have to be sensitive on the timing and make sure that a sound decision is made. Monterey has a very talented record and good city staff and employees. I’m sure they’ll rally behind the city until they make their appointment.”
