Pickett Selected In State Program To Evaluate Sites For Industry

The state has selected Pickett County to evaluate sites worthy of developing a shovel-ready industrial site.

Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Billy Robbins said eight sites have already been evaluated by the state.

“Depending upon their review on which may be a better site, it may lead to acquisition or go into funding sources to see what is available,” Robbins said. “The county prepping to move forward and plans being drawn up.”

Robbins said officials looked at infrastructure such as water, sewer and electricity as well as access to Highway 111. Robbins said feedback on industrial feasibility is expected back early next year.

Pickett County was one of six counties statewide selected for the state property evaluation program. Robbins said the program focuses on rural communities that are economically at-risk.

Robbins said the program opens the door for state and local investments to bring a new industry to the county. Robbins said getting higher paying jobs and keeping workers local is the goal.
