Sparta has a new mayor in Jerry Lowery.
Lowery received 59.3 percent of the vote beating Mayor Jeff Young who got 40.7 percent. Lowery said he believed the people wanted a change after Young served 12 years as mayor.
“I am a believer in term limits, and I think there was a lot of people while I was out campaigning people that like term limits in all areas of government,” Lowery said. “We don’t have it at this level, and I campaigned that I would like to see that put in and that’s something I am going to try to do.”
Lowery said transparency is something he wants to improve on. Lowery said he wants to start having town hall meetings and live stream all city business.
Lowery said the city’s aggressive paving and infrastructure improvement plan is something he wants to continue. Lowery said employee pay is also an issue on the forefront as the city completed a pay study.
