Cookeville City Council Approves Ordinance For New Department

Cookeville City Council approved an allocation of some $20,000 for Leadership Putnam’s sculpture honoring victims of the 2020 tornado.

The sculpture’s committee had raised over $85,000 for the project, but an increase in the cost of materials required additional funds. The sculpture will be set at Dogwood Park.

In other business, Council also approved an emergency repair for a water intake drive. Water Quality Control Department Director Barry Turner said the city can still provide water with one drive out of service, but if both drives go out it could be a problem for the city. He said crews were working on Thursday to get the $20,163 rebuild in place.

Cookeville City Council also approved the second reading of an ordinance creating a new Department of Community Development.

The new department will include Divisions of Planning, Codes, and Economic Development. It abolishes the Departments of Planning and Codes.

Council approved the ordinance unanimously.
