WCTE’s Third Annual Downtown Film Festival Returns August 27th

WCTE’s Third Annual Downtown Film Festival returns with its celebration of storytelling later this month.

WCTE President Avery Hutchins said the festival will host a variety of documentaries and short films from independent and local filmmakers.

“We just find the importance in telling peoples’ stories, WCTE and PBS have been telling the stories of Upper Cumberland for 44 years,” Hutchins said. “So we think there’s power in knowledge, and by watching these films you’re going to learn something new.”

Hutchins said they select their films both by reaching out to filmmakers and having films sent for consideration. She said all films are selected with the goal of educating, entertaining and informing audiences.

Hutchins said WCTE has patterned with the RiverRun International Film Festival in North Carolina and will have two feature films from that festival. She said other films cover a variety of genres and topics, such as a beauty shop, Sewanee University, and musician John Hyatt.

“That’s really our mission at WCTE is to get people out into the community seeing and hearing new things,” Hutchins said. “And then having an experience that makes them want to share that with other people.”

The festival will be on August 27th from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Cookeville Performing Arts Center. Tickets are now available online by visiting cookevillefilmfest.com for $20 or on-site the day of the festival for $25. Tickets are also available for the Festival Kick-Off Party for $40 by advance purchase only. For more information and tickets, visit cookevillefilmfest.com.
