Jackson Co Commission Tables Proposal To Sheriff’s K9 Deputies

A Jackson County Commission meeting got contentious Monday night after commissioners tabled the proposal to retire two Sheriff’s K9 Deputies.

Sheriff Marty Hinson said that one K9 Deputy is almost seven-years-old and one is nine years old. Commissioner Chris Carter, who is also running for Sheriff, said that with the election just 10 days away, this is should be put off until the next meeting.

“And I just don’t think it’s a good idea to give away $20,000 worth of assets,” Carter said.  “I’ve talked to Clint Heston, he’s the one who trains the dogs. He said the one dog Ozzy probably does need to be retired pretty soon, and he said the other’s still got a few years left.”

Hinson said that there were two pups that the department could replace the retirees with. He said the budget would need to be looked at in order to do such a replacement.

Other commissioners agreed with Carter, and the motion was tabled until the September meeting. After the meeting adjourned, a Sheriff’s Deputy approached Carter and had heated words.
