Putnam County Commissioner candidate Robert Owens has pulled out of the District 10 race happening next month.
Owens said he decided to remove his name after accepting the director position for Boys State.
“My wife and I had a conversation and said you’re going to have to choose between the two, and I felt like my reach and my impact would be longer and deeper by working in a higher capacity with Tennessee American Legion Boys State,” Owens said.
Owens said he made the decision after the withdraw deadline, so his name will still be on the ballot. Owens said a want to serve the community was why he entered the race.
“It’s been something that I’ve entertained since I was a much younger man that I knew I would do as I matured,” Owens said. “I thought this might be the time to do that. I explored it a little bit, and next thing you know people heard that I picked up my papers. I was really just trying to explore it, and I wanted to pray about it a little more, but the next thing you know, people saw it in the paper and say they would support me, and so I said let me go ahead and job in.”
Owens was running as an independent candidate. This leaves Republican incumbents Terry Randolph and Kim Bradford seeking the two District 10 seats. Owens said he looks forward to potentially running again in the future.
“This is maybe not goodbye, but just not right now,” Owens said.
Owens said he officially begins the Boys State position in 2023. Owens said he plans to continue his other roles in the Cookeville community.
