Hillham Elementary has a new principal in Kelly Montgomery.
She replaces Kim Dial who is now a faculty member of Hillham Elementary. Montgomery said as a first time principal, student success will be her focus this school year.
“A family approach is what Overton County is good at, and we’ve always taken athletic endeavors, academic endeavors, social and emotional worries for children, we try to take care of that entire spectrum,” Montgomery said. “For me it is students success, but that doesn’t just boil down to test scores.”
Montgomery said she wants to continue preparing students for the next step and keep a sense of community at the school. Montgomery said she has been working with her staff to set goals for the upcoming school year.
“Our admin team, faculty and staff are busy working with goal setting,” Montgomery said. “I think that is always the smartest place to start. Looking back at what we did well last year, what would we like to continue on with and what we would like to improve on, and so, when we as adults set reasonable goals, I think we can transfer that into the classroom.”
The Overton County native has 28 years of experience in public education. Fifteen of those spent teaching science at Livingston Academy and 13 years as an assistant principal.
James Cox will serve as the school’s new Assistant Principal.
