Students Taking Advantage Of Tech’s Online Courses For This Summer Session

Tennessee Tech’s summer session is seeing slightly decreased numbers than usual.

Karen Lykins is the Interim Vice President for Student Enrollment. She said that despite lower than average numbers, they are offering even more courses for summer sessions than ever before. Lykins said that offering more online courses and has been a big plus for students.

“I think the summer online students just reflect what the students want out of the summer,” Lykins said. “Some flexibility, the ability to do asynchronous classes, so that you can have a work schedule, you can go on a vacation, and you can work in your classes on your own time.”

Lykins said that the pandemic influenced the university to try and increase and enhance online course options. She said that they learned about their capability to deliver a good online course just as they deliver their in-person courses.

Lykins said that the most popular summer courses typically coincide with the most popular majors. She said they see a healthy enrollment in courses in the college of business courses or computer science. She said that summer courses afford students the opportunity to both catch-up and get ahead.

“Summer’s a little bit of a different experience,” Lykins said. “So if someone is looking to take that one class they to focus on that is a little more difficult to carry with a full schedule it might be a great time for that.”
