Putnam County School Board rejected the $330,868 bid for improvements at Upperman High School’s baseball field.
Director of Schools Corby King said that the bid came back almost double what the system had originally budgeted. He said that the school has been trying to work on drainage issues at the field.
“So we’ve gone back talking with the Maintenance and Facilities Supervisor John Magura and some of the architects and engineers and looking at other options for the field,” King said. “So what we’re going to try to do is what they call top dressing, adding some sand in some of the spots in some of the low areas to correct the issues. Hopefully, it’ll be much more economical.”
King said that the field was originally built in a low-lying area which made it difficult and sometimes impossible to play on because of flooding. He said that over the past year the booster club, the team, and the school board have done some work to mitigate the issue.
King said that applying the top dressing will take about two to three baseball seasons to complete.
