The Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 38 in Crossville invites the public to join them for the Police Memorial Day Program on Thursday, May 19.
President and Cumberland Sheriff’s Deputy Kobe Cox said that Police Memorial Day was originally started in 1962 by President John F. Kennedy.
“As the President of the FOP, we try to support those whose husbands or wives lose their lives in the line of duty,” Cox said. “And this is just a way to show our respect to the people who paid the ultimate sacrifice. It’s the biggest sacrifice you can make for your country, and this is just a way we can try to show that respect.”
Cox said that the event in Crossville will have speeches from a pastor, Crossville Mayor James Mayberry, and Cumberland County Mayor Allen Foster. He said that there will also be a presentation of colors and a performance of TAPS by the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Cox said that the program will be held at the gazebo next to the courthouse at 11 a.m. He said that the public is encouraged to attend and show support.
“These men and women who have given their lives have given the ultimate sacrifice as I said, if only to make the community a safer place,” Cox said. “So they have done this for their members of their community. And I think that’s why (the community) should attend.”
