Trash pickup for Gainesboro residents could be a reality after the Board of Aldermen heard a proposal for trash services Thursday night.
Chase Bishop of ALC Disposal said the company needs 75 customers to consider expanding to Gainesboro. Mayor Lloyd Williams said the town will send flyers gauging interest through this month’s utility billing.
“The city we used to have a garbage pickup,” Williams said. “It was not affordable for the city to keep it up. That was before my time. They’re proposing they will offer a service to the individuals here for $26 a month.”
Aldermen Ricky Head asked Bishop if a lower price could be offered if the city could get 300 customers. Bishop said he would be willing to negotiate on the price. Head said he would like to see the city help offset some of the cost.
“It’s cheaper than having trash and a trash truck,” Head said. “The city residents get nothing from us. Absolutely nothing.”
Bishops said individuals would be charged directly from the company for a weekly pickup. The Cookeville based business currently serves residents in Putnam, Overton and Jackson Counties.
“We provide a trash can and drop that off,” Bishop said. “You just put that at the road every week for what ever day we decide for here.”
Bishop said he wanted to approach the board about the opportunity before asking residents directly. Head said he believes the majority of residents would be interested.
