Cumberland County Soil Conservation Plant Sale This Week

Looking for locally grown native plants for the spring season?

The Cumberland County Soil Conservation District’s hosting its annual tree and plant sale from April 7th-9th. District Worker Janet Dowlen said there is a little bit of everything for everybody.

“We’ll have a lot of different sizes, a lot of things that are very small,” Dowlen said. “Perennials, things that they can put in their garden for pollinators species, but then also have a variety of different trees.”

Dowlen said a big selling point is none of the plants are considered invasive species. Dowlen said all the plants at the event have been provided by local nurseries. Dowlen said the district has even grown some plants of their own.

“They’re all grown within a pretty close proximity to Cumberland County,” Dowlen said. “So, we felt like it was good to have something that was grown fairly local and perform better here.”

Dowlen said all proceeds from the plant sale will go to students of Cumberland County. Dowlen said prospective Tennessee Tech agriculture majors benefit from the scholarships. Dowlen said last year, over 10 students received a scholarship

“They should come out and support their local scholarships for students, but also take advantage of a really interesting section of native plants that you couldn’t find anywhere else,” Dowlen said.

The annual tree and plant sale will be Thursday and Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to noon. It takes place at the Cumberland County Fairgrounds Livestock Pavilion at 1398 Livingston Road.
