Putnam County Seeing Lows In Democratic Poll Workers

The Putnam County Election Commission needs more Democratic workers to meet the state mandated 50/50 party split.

Election Administrator Michelle Honeycutt said the Republican Party workers are there, but state assistance may be needed for the Democratic side.

“Right now, we’re to the point I’m fixing have to call the state and say what do you want me to do?” Honeycutt said. “I cannot get 50/50 on the Democrats or the Republicans in the precincts, so I got to find out what we do.”

Honeycutt said the struggle to find workers is a common occurrence, but the election office has never been this low. Honeycutt said the county is “not close” to achieving the 50/50 split.

“I don’t think we’ve been this low before,” Honeycutt said. “That’s why I’m going to call them and see what do I need to do, because we need it. We’re not getting the Democrats we should be getting.”

Honeycutt said she is unsure what options would be available from a state level. From a local level, Honeycutt said she hopes the recent pay increases attracts more workers for the May elections.
