Kids on the Rise, a mentor-based program for children experiencing life challenges, needs more volunteers to complete its mission.
The Crossville-based organization pairs caring adult mentors with children that have gaps in opportunities. Executive Director Pam Burris said the goal is for all children to succeed in all things they do.
“Help them grow and thrive recognizing that some kids would just do better if they had an adult in their life that is more supportive, caring and nurturing,” Burris said.
Burris said mentors meet with their child once a week. Burris said a normal day is flexible to find common interests to help build a relationship. Burris said often times mentors help with homework, visit the library, garden or just play board games.
“We currently have about 20 kids on our waiting list, and our goal would be that we don’t have kids waiting for a mentor. That we have mentors waiting for kids,” Burris said.
Burris said children that are mentored usually fair better in school, proceed to higher education and also have better mental health. Burris said a mentor’s role in a child’s life could change their future for the better.
Burris said mentors will be required to pass a background check and undergo an interviewing process. You can visit www.kidsontherise.org or call (931)-459-2388.
