Cookeville was awarded a second multi-modal grant to continue work on the East Spring Street sidewalk project.
Public Works Director Greg Brown said that the project that started eight years ago but government delays increased costs. Quickly, the work became too expensive to complete with just one grant. He said that the second $950,000 grant will cover work from Raider Drive to Denton Avenue.
“It’s another you know, nearly a million dollars that will help pay for it,” Brown said. “And we’ve still got to go through the approval process again on the planned revisions. So then we’ll do another cost estimate to see what this will cost before we bid it out. So until we get the final cost estimate we won’t know exactly what it’ll do, but it will help tremendously with that extra money.”
Brown said that the grant requires a five percent match from the city, which totals some $47,500. He said that they hope to bid out this phase in late summer or in the fall.
Brown said that they plan on bidding out phase one this spring. He said that phase will cover Old Kentucky Road to Denton Avenue.
