Registrations Open For Cupid’s Chase 5K Benefiting Community Options Inc.

Sign-ups are live for the annual Cupid’s Chase 5K, set to be on February 12th at Tennessee Tech.

Community Options Inc. hosts the 5K every year at over 30 locations across the country. Cookeville Branch’s Executive Director Kristine Shirley said that the event is to raise funds for those with mental and developmental disabilities.

“Say someone needs OT therapy equipment, this would bring those funds in to support that,” Shirley said. “Or someone can’t afford new living room furniture and they really need furniture. This would be funding that we could fall back on so we can get them the things that they need.”

Shirley said that in addition to raising funds, the 5K also serves to raise awareness.

“And I think it’s very important because I’ve even taken people to doctor’s appointments and still have a hard time,” Shirley said. “Because people are not used to interacting with people of this population.”

Shirley said that people should consider taking part not only as a way to get exercise but also as a way to promote the inclusion of people with disabilities in the community.

“It’s supporting people with disabilities be part of our society,” Shirley said. “It’s very important to incorporate them with us because they are human beings just like us.”

Shirley said you can register at the event page on the organization’s website for $35. She said that you can also sign up the day of before the race starts at 10 a.m.
