The Cookeville-Putnam County NAACP is hosting a breakfast Monday morning in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
President Tom Savage said that the virtual event will be in honor of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He said that they want to recognize King’s integral role in the civil rights of African Americans.
“Where it was a non-violent approach to lift of people of color in the United States,” Savage said. “As you know, coming out of Jim Crow, helping implement Brown vs. Board of Education and the integration of schools, and just you know, making sure we’re able to vote. At that time we were not able to vote, and in 1964 with the Civil Rights Act, which he played a major role in. And just bringing about harmony in America through peace and love.”
Savage said those that tune in can expect to hear from keynote speaker Pastor David Meek from the historically black church McClellan Avenue Church of Christ. He said there will also be songs, and other remarks commemorating Dr. King’s efforts.
Vice President Johnnie Wheeler said that because it’s virtual, you can tune in from your own home to take part in the special event.
“It is virtual and you can listen with your own coffee in your own house and stay safe,” Wheeler said. “And listen to the speeches and listen to the good singing. Everybody knows that when the NAACP puts on something, it’s all about you and all about God. So tune in, and listen, and drink your coffee at home and be safe.”
