Putnam BOE Approves Contract To Expand Upperman

Putnam County Schools set to begin the process to expand Upperman High School.

Director of Schools Corby King said the school system will work with Architect Kim Chamberlin to design the expansion.

“We have a rough sketch of where the classrooms will be and what it will look like,” King said. “But now, he will get in much like what he has done with the new school project. Actually hammering out the design and where are the classrooms, what will be included, get the time and get it ready to go out for bid.”

King said initial designs call for a dual purpose area to be used by JROTC in the day and the wrestling team in the evening. An additional four classrooms, a multipurpose room and a new chorus room also included.

“The classroom wing will be on the west end of the high school kind of blending in with the current facility,” King said. “The wrestling/JROTC facility will be off near where the gym is. The chorus room near where the band room currently is in the back of that building.”

King said he would like to see the project go out for bid this summer. The expansion a part of the school system’s third spending plan of federal COVID money. Stipulations give Putnam a 2024 deadline for completion.
