The key to using kerosene heaters is proper maintenance.
That’s according to Livingston Fire Chief Rocky Dial. Dial said that users need to make sure the equipment is clean with the wick checked prior to use.
“So it doesn’t put off any more vapors and smell than what it should,” Dial said. “Just make sure that they’re clean and make sure you fuel them outside and don’t keep it lit when you’re fueling them.”
Dial said that some heaters come with the ability to remove the fuel tank so you don’t have to take the entire heater outside. He said that fueling outside is important because it prevents kerosene spills inside the home.
Dial said users should also ensure the heaters are kept away from any combustible materials.
“We see several people that light it and scoot it back in the corner by cardboard boxes and stuff,” Dial said. “The heat will radiate and catch the box on fire. So make sure they are on a well-exposed area when you’re using them and don’t push it back against the wall and stuff such as that.”
