Nine Senior Centers Across UC Rewarded Grants From State

Nine Upper Cumberland Senior Centers will receive $5,000 grants through the Tennessee Commission on Aging and Disability.

Celina Senior Center Director Sandra Wix said she wants to use the funding for supplies to continue art classes for seniors.

“It will have a great impact for my center,” Wix said. “We are a small center, but we can stretch $5,000 for different materials and stuff that you need. We can get great use out of that $5,000.”

Monterey Senior Center Director Brigitte Delk said she plans to do some building maintenance while also working towards a new bus for seniors.

“It was very exciting,” Delk said. “I took this position in August, and I have been working ever since I took the position to get this grant. It’s going to be amazing especially for our community and our seniors.”

Wix said the grant should make it to the local level sometime in February. Senior Centers of Baxter, Byrdstown, Fall Creek Falls, Fentress, Granville, McMinnville/Warren
and Putnam County will also receive grants.

“It’s very vital for us,” Wix said. “It’s a great time that we can do this to get the grant award. I am so excited to be one of the recipients of is.”

The Tennessee Commission on Aging and Disability (TCAD) announced $400,000 has been awarded to senior centers across the state. TCAD received 130 full applications representing 86 of the state’s 95 counties. Eighty senior centers throughout 59 counties were individually awarded.
