Fairfield Glade Memorial Breaks Ground As Community Celebrates Veterans Day

The Fairfield Glade Veterans and First Responders Memorial at Robin Hood Park will break ground Thursday.

Board President Chief Mike Williams said the event is the center piece of the community’s celebration of Veterans Day.

“It started out as an idea several years ago, and then, the preparation for this and forming the 501 C-3 and raising the money,” Williams said. “It’s been a long journey, but we’re so excited to actually get the shovels in the ground.”

Williams said the multi-year project has three phases of work. Williams said Thursday marks the start of the flag plaza dedicated to the different military and first responder branches.

“They’re going to be extremely tall flag poles representing each service and first responders in big circles,” Williams said. “Imagine big circles, and in those circles, we are going to sell bricks, so loved ones or friends can help donate to the memorial and have their loved ones names.”

Williams said State Representative Paul Bailey and House Speaker Cameron Sexton will be present for the 3:00 p.m. ground breaking. Williams said Cumberland County has a large presence of veterans and retired first responders.

“So this is a project not only for Fairfield Glade, but all of Cumberland County, because Cumberland County has a large amount of veterans that will be represented,” Williams said.

Williams said the board has been fundraising for the project over the past three years. Williams said the memorial is in partnership with the Fairfield Glade Community Club, which donated the land use.
