Follow the Yellow Brick Road to Cookeville’s KDB Montessori Learning Center to enter the Land of Oz.
Every Friday and Saturday in October the center transforms into a Wizard of Oz themed event. Co-Owner Heather May said the center operates as a classroom during the week, but come the weekend, fictional characters come to life.
“They paint a pumpkin with Glinda the Good Witch,” May said. “They will dig in a trough full of corn with Zeke the Cowardly Lion. And with Dorothy, they bake cookies, decorate cookies with Auntie Em’s special recipe, and then with the wicked witch, they make slime in her dungeon.”
Co-Owner Kimberly Bynum said shows start every hour from 1:00- 7:00 p.m. through appointment only. Bynum said it is a full family event, so children of all ages are welcome.
“It was actually Heather, my co-owner’s idea,” Bynum said. “She runs attractions in Louisiana and California and they weren’t able to do it this year due to COVID and due to a hurricane that hit. So, she asked if we could do it here. So, we are very excited to bring it to Cookeville.”
Bynum said the best part has been seeing the children’s faces light up when they see the decorations and costumes. Bynum said with the event indoors, rain or shine the portal to the Land of Oz is open.
