Livingston PD Investigating Counterfeit Money Circulating Community

Livingston Police investigating the use of counterfeit bills at local businesses this week.

Police Chief Greg Etheredge said a man used movie prop money as smaller bills to make purchases. Etheredge said the department has a suspect identified.

“We’re aware of the situation,” Etheredge said. “It’s always a good thing to remind the merchants and people if something doesn’t feels right, we’re so used to picking up money. You kind of know how it feels and kind of know how it looks, certainly if you get larger bills pay extra attention.”

Etheredge said the money used for this crime specifically indicated on the bill it could not be used for purchases. Etheredge said looking at serial numbers, differences in texture and holding the bill to the light can distinguish fake money.

“A lot of times it is 100s, 50s and 20s we deal with,” Etheredge said. “This $10 version is a little unusual, but there is always somebody that wants to take advantage of the system when they can. Our position is if you rip off one of our businesses, we are going to try to do our best to track you down and bring you to justice.”
