Upper Cumberland Electric Membership Corporation warns customers of ongoing scam attempts.
CEO Jennifer Brogdon said people have been receiving calls from (931) numbers posing as UCEMC. Brogdon said the scammers tell members their electric bill is unpaid, and threaten to shut off power if a payment is not made over the phone.
“First of all, if a member is late paying their power bill, they will receive some sort of notification by mail,” Brogdon said. “If they don’t respond timely to pay their power bill, we will call them, but when we call, we will make a variety of ways available to them to pay their bill.”
Brogdon said being pressured to share credit card information over the phone is a sure sign of scam. If a customer receives a call like this, Brogdon said call the corporation’s 1-800 number to report the incident.
“We’re worried about our older population and elderly members,” Brogdon said. “They are often targets of scams like this, and they may not be on social media and see our warnings.”
Brogdon said scam calls are a periodic issue that UCEMC faces. Brogdon said members that receive a call and are uncomfortable can contact 1-(800) 261-2940 to restart conversations on a bill.
