The Warren County Sanitation Department is holding a hazardous waste take back event Saturday.
Director Josh Roberts said now is the time to check the basement, garage and under the sink for chemicals and cleaners. Roberts said it does not matter how much hazardous waste you need to get rid of, the county can take it.
“You look, you find older stuff that is out of date that is not going to be usable,” Roberts said. “You need to know the proper way to dispose of that material. So this way, this is free for a Warren County citizen and you can bring it.”
Roberts said they will even take old gasoline and diesel fuel, the full list of hazardous waste is on the county’s website. He said that often people make mistakes, creating a dangerous job for sanitation workers trying to serve the public.
“Throwing it in your household trash daily, that’s something that we see sometimes and it just really bothers us,” Roberts said. “This stuff is hazardous to the community and our country and we need to dispose of it correctly.”
Roberts said anything that can be recycled, will be recycled. Roberts said trying to get rid of hazardous waste the wrong way, can come back to affect you and your community.
“You know, your household trash it goes in the ground at these landfills,” Roberts said. “You just think of a drain opener or five gallons of gas put in the ground. Well, we drink that.”
Roberts said the only things they cannot take on Saturday include explosives, medical waste, radioactive waste and smoke detectors. However, they can take used needles.
Roberts said the gates will be open at the Warren County Fairgrounds from 9:00 AM until 1:00 PM.
