Jackson County Fire Crews Contain Highway 56 Motel Fire

Jackson County fire crews responded to a fire at the Highway 56 motel early Tuesday morning.

Assistant Fire Chief Jason Lynn said smoke was visible when they arrived to a fire in what was believed to be an unoccupied room. Lynn said it was fortunate the fire was able to be contained to a bathroom.

“A lot of people had gone out when we got there and I know some do live in the motel up there,” Lynn said. “We could have lost I’m guessing around 10 to 15 units in that section of it right there. So there’s no fire breaks in the motel so it could have gotten bad really quick.”

Lynn said the fire was able to be knocked back quickly, only taking roughly 10 minutes to extinguish. Lynn said that a preliminary assessment indicates the fire could have been caused by the electrical system in the aging motel.

“Very minimal damage,” Lynn said. “All damage was held to that one bathroom.”

Lynn said the call came in before 4:00 AM on Tuesday. He said that crews were on scene ventilating, using thermal equipment and checking for any fire spread for roughly an hour.
