Applications Due Friday For Clay, Jackson Co. Veterans Service Officer

The application period for the Clay and Jackson County Veterans Service Officer position comes to a close Friday.

Richard Accurso is a local veteran leading the hiring panel. Accurso said about six candidates have expressed interest in the job.

“What we are trying to do is get this probably immediately after we start the interview process, which I am hoping will be within the next week,” Accurso said. “Because there is a training segment that is very critical in this job.”

Accurso said the state training takes place the last week of July. Accurso said three members of the Celina American Post and the Jackson County Post, as well as himself, make up the hiring board.

“What we do is basically ask a number of questions and filter through if the individual has a real interest in doing this,” Accurso said. “Based on the number of applicants, we are just going to try to find the best candidate to serve this area.”

The position was left vacant due to Bob Cole resigning for health issues. Accurso said the officer plays a vital role in providing services to veterans of the community.

“There is a number of veterans and some of these veterans are elderly, have difficulties communicating or finding out information and they may have a particular need and they’re not sure if that need will be covered by the Veteran’s Administration,” Accurso said. “This individual can take them through and be their conduit.”

Applications can be submitted at the Clay and Jackson County Mayor offices. Accurso said all candidates must be local veterans.
