Be Aware Of Kids Handling Fireworks During 4th Of July Celebrations

Fireworks season is here and there are a number of ways that a celebration can turn into an emergency.

Livingston Fire Chief Rocky Dial said that often people like to hold fireworks or shoot them at an angle which can lead to fire and injury. Dial said parents need to be vigilant that children know how to use fireworks before they’re allowed to use them.

“Let them shoot the ones off that is recommended for their age level,” Dial said. “So don’t go out there and let them light those great old big ones up. 7-8 year old don’t need to be lighting those great big old fireworks up. Because if they tip over they may not realize it in time to get away.”

Dial said it does not take much to spark a fire.

He said kids playing with sparklers need to have a container on hand to keep from laying a hot firework in the grass. Dial said that there is not a specific type of firework that leads to greater danger, he said that misuse is the main cause of accidents.
