Upper Cumberland Electric Membership Corporation reports scammers posing as company employees in Jackson County.
UCEMC CEO and General Manager Jennifer Brogdon said that people in a black suburban would approach residents saying they were company employees who wanted to check on things in the home, but then would later return and break into their cars and steal things
“I think their angle would be to pretend to be someone they aren’t so the residents become comfortable and allow them to have run of the property,” Brogdon said. “But it would be a very unusual circumstance for anyone from the electric company to ask for access to your house.”
Brogdon said that will employees always be in official, marked vehicles and wear identifiable uniforms. The people involved have not yet been identified, and Brogdon said she hopes spreading the word will help officials get a better picture.
Brogdon said that moving forward, she wants residents to always verify the identities of people who claim to be someone who could potentially take advantage of them.
“If you see someone who claims to be with the company or any other company, just make sure they have credentials,” Brogdon said. “Make sure that not only they have logo’d apparel on, but they have any credentials, I.D. badges, et cetera, and that the logo on the badges and the clothing match the logo on the truck.”
