Prescott South Middle School Shares the Magic of “Matilda Jr.” the Musical

Prescott South Middle School invites the community to see their 55-person cast in its production of “Matilda Jr.,” a musical adaptation of the Roald Dahl book featuring a magical little girl with a big heart.

The students have been rehearsing since December, and are ready and excited to showcase their talents to the community. Director and teacher at Prescott Middle School Ashley Francis said the story of Matilda is one about overcoming seemingly impossible odds, and that story is one that people need right now.

“It’s just a really great uplifting tale that’s really important I think for everyone to see at this time especially with all the hard times that we’ve had recently with COVID-19 and all the difficulties that have gone along with that,” Francis said.

Francis said that thus far, the show has been a huge success. Audience members can expect to be moved by both the message of the show and the fact that people can be together again.

“It’s been absolutely amazing and so rewarding because we’ve had so many people who have come to see the show that afterwards they’re just in tears,” Francis said. “My former director came to see it and he just couldn’t speak. He said ‘I’m just so thankful to have live theatre in this community again’ and it’s just so important.”

After uncertainty surrounding their ability to do live performances safely, Francis said the best part of her experience is how proud the students have made her in their adaptability.

“It has been amazingly rewarding as a teacher to see my kids overcome those challenges and still give it everything that they have in every single show regardless of the situation,” Francis said. “That kind of carries over the same themes of ‘Matilda,’ so that’s been super neat to see.”

“Matilda Jr.” runs until Friday, May 14th with $5.00 tickets for children, seniors, teachers and students, $7.00 tickets for all other adults, and a special “Dollar Night” on Thursday, May 13th with tickets for $1. Visit CPAC’s website for more details.
