Some $600,000 worth of sewer upgrades are coming to Gainesboro this year.
The Board of Aldermen started the process of spending the awarded Community Development Block Grant. Engineer Nathaniel Green said the approved $76,000 contract is the first appropriations to find where rehab is needed.
“We have to basically TV inside the lines and perform cleaning that will be to remove any debris that will be inside the sewer line,” Green said. “So that we can have a better visual of everything that is going on inside, so we can detect leaky lines.”
Green said Gainesboro ranked very high when it came to the scoring to earn the grant. The contractor has 75 days of the notice to complete the work.
“We were awarded approximately $630,000 from the state ECD office to go toward our sewer issues,” Green said. “The town of Gainesboro ranked very high on that list, and we’re fortunate to have the funding from the state.”
Green said the expenditure most be approved by the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development before work can begin since this is the first money spent from the grant.
“At the beginning of any sewer collection system rehab project, you have to assess the condition of the sewer system to be able to locate where you are going to focus your rehab,” Green said. “So basically, that is what we are doing right now.”
In other business, the Board of Aldermen approved a some $6,000 bid to replace the heating and cooling units of city hall. Members also granted permission for a local organization to clean the head stones at the city cemetery at no cost.
