Upperman High School invites you to join them at their spring performance of the musical, “Footloose.”
The musical is based off of the 1984 movie by the same name. Director Renee Craig said she and her students are excited to bring the community together for an evening of entertainment.
“Live theatre is something that COVID really affected a lot. I think this is great we’re having this for the community because people are ready to get back out and enjoy that part of the arts again,” said Craig.
While the show is not the full musical, Craig said that performance will feature the iconic music and fun dance numbers. Craig said she wants audience members to come ready to enjoy themselves and have fun.
“The actors and actresses on that stage thrive off of audience involvement. So clap a lot, and sing along, and do anything you want to be a part of that process because the kids will give you so much more when you do that. It makes it a lot more fun for everybody–it makes it more fun for the audience and it makes it more fun for the students as well,” said Craig.
After a year without theatre, Craig said she’s seen just how important the arts are to her students, and hopes community support will encourage them in their art.
“It teaches them so much about teamwork, and helping others and doing that. That’s what theatre is to me and to so many of these kids. The community needs to come out and support that and see that because we need arts to continue in these schools, we need arts to continue in this community,” said Craig.
The show is at the Dogwood Park Ampitheatre on May 6th at 7:00 p.m. Admission is free, but donations are appreciated.
