Ingredients in place for a stormy Thursday across the Upper Cumberland.
Meteorologist Rob Carolan said the Severe Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma, has placed the area under a moderate risk of severe thunderstorms later this afternoon and into the evening.
“The high risk, which is rare to see, is off to our southwest,” Carolan said. “It does include the Memphis area and extends down toward Jackson, Mississippi. But we are at risk today for some long lived supercell thunderstorms that could have the potential to put tornadoes on the ground. They’d be moving from southwest towards the north and east today.”
Carolan said showers will begin Thursday morning. The threat of strong to severe storms will range from Noon to 5pm.
“Right now, the stormy weather is back in Texas and the storms aren’t that strong,” Carolan said. “But as the day goes on, we will keep an eye out to see where those strong thunderstorms do start to develop.”
Strong winds outside thunderstorms will continue through Friday. That may be an issue with trees weakened by the February ice storm.
