Jackson County’s recreation master plan is set to be revealed on April 12th during the next county commission meeting.
Engineering Firm Ragan-Smith Associates will compile over 400 survey results and other community comments to create the 10 year plan. Jackson County Mayor Randy Heady said the top 12 recreation wants were shared during Tuesday’s community input session.
“Number one was the people of the community here in Jackson County they want to see something done with Roaring River Park,” Heady said. “So. it is important. That’s has always been a goal of mine to see if we could do something with that, but I needed the communities input and that’s what they wanted.”
Heady said seeing the participation from residents during the process has been exciting. Heady said the community also wants recreation that explores the history of Jackson County’s use of the Cumberland River.
“We had anywhere upwards to 12 to 16 ports in the county back in the early 1900’s,” Heady said. “The boats would come up the river and stop to do business with the locals there from selling goods to buying goods. We talked about that last night. Implementation of a place where that history can be put out for display.”
Heady said about 50 people in total participated Tuesday. Heady said the need for more green space was expressed, as well.
“The other communities of the county that are growing in population whether it be Center Grove, Dodson Branch, Granville,” Heady said. “About the need of doing parks in those areas. Maybe, on a much smaller scale, but I am excited to see what they come up with for those communities, also.”
