Dekalb County Schools have opened registration for its Summer Learning Camp.
The schedule is set for May 25 until June 23 from 8:00 AM until 3:00 PM. Dekalb County Director of Schools Patrick Cripps said anytime students were out of the building, there was learning lost.
“We have students that have been remote all year long and then we’ve had some that missed extended periods,” Cripps said. “If they’re struggling in school this is a great opportunity to get in and refine those skills, to hopefully catch them up.”
Cripps said the system has been fortunate to be able to cover most Summer Learning Camp expenses with the provided state funding. However, Cripps said they are still determining how to fund transportation.
“We still plan to transport our students through those programs, we’ve got some other funding that hopefully we can use,” Cripps said. “ESSER or you’ve got 21st Century or LEAPS grant.”
Cripps said that staffing will be based on how many students enroll. However, he said the goal is to stay close to the student to teacher ratio recommended by the state.
“The state pretty much told us 1:13 would be the lowest one teacher per 13 kids,” Cripps said. “So we’re looking to stay in the 15 range, something like that.”
Cripps said starting next year that students could be retained if they are not reading on grade level in third grade. He said the main focus of the Summer Learning Camp is for reading and math.
Cripps said they will have the STREAM mini-camp going for students everyday during the camp. This program focuses on science, technology, reading, art and math.
He said the Summer Learning Camp will operate out of all the elementary schools and Dekalb Middle School.
