UC Habitat For Humanity Building First Overton Home

The first Upper Cumberland Habitat for Humanity home in Overton County is nearing construction.

Executive Director Pam Ealey said walls will be built April 17 for the Thomas Road home. Ealey said it takes volunteers and community engagement to make this home a reality for the buyer.

“All we’re doing is giving families an opportunity to change their lives,” Ealey said. “What they do with it, it’s up to them. The more people we have owning homes, the better for the entire community.”

Ealy said the goal right now is to have the home completed by June. Ealey said they would like to stay in the community to complete the project.

“We’d love to hire local subcontractors in Livingston or if they want to donate their services,” Ealey said. “We need to know and again they can call me to learn more, but we do hire typically subs for some basic work, but most of it’s volunteers.”

She said this opportunity is being made possible by sponsors like Life Church, Central City Church and Country Farm and Home. However, Ealey said local volunteers giving their time make these homes possible.

“Our work requires volunteers at all levels, not just building the homes,” Ealey said. “Doing the planning, doing the fundraising and so we really need to see the community of Livingston and Overton County come forward, get excited about this home. Help us on future homes, help us find land, we need some build-able lots for future homes.”

Ealey said volunteers can signup online at UC Habitat for Humanity’s website. The walls will be raised for the home on April 24.
