Jackson County Outdoor Master Plan Highlights River Possibilities

The river could be the spine of Jackson County’s recreational opportunities.

That’s according to planner Kevin Gunther who led a public meeting Tuesday night on Jackson County’s master parks and recreation plan. Gunther said the river could provide recreational opportunities that draw tourists to Jackson County.

“Now you can think about the kind of different experiences you can give people,” Gunther said. “If they could go from Roaring River Park to Gladeville and have two, very different experiences but have a comfortable route that they could bike in one day. Then you start setting something up where people would want to come back and experience that more than one time.”

Citizens spoke during the meeting about neglected facilities around the county, the opportunities for using the old golf course property, as well as creating biking and cross country facilities during the meeting.

“We have got to finish this whole process by May and the reason for that, is that part of this is being processed through a TDEC grant,” Gunther said. “They have a schedule requirement to have us make sure that we’re done with the master plan. The beauty of that is, based on the master plan, you can go after some additional grant money with TDEC and other agencies.”

The comments will be brought together with other data to produce recommendations for county leaders March 23.
